The Malaysian Fire Service began in 1883 with the establishment of the Selangor State Volunteer Fire Brigade led by HF Bellamy with 15 members. This force, which was placed under the Sanitary Board, became the Permanent Fire and Rescue Force in 1895. The service continued to expand in each state and was placed under the Municipal Council or Rural Board. In 1946, after the Second World War, the 'Malayan Union Fire Services' force was formed. The MUS is headquartered in Kuala Lumpur.

Through the Federation of Malaya agreement, the Fire Service was handed back to the state governments under the administration of the Urban Board and Rural Board according to their respective states. To coordinate the Fire Service, a Ministry of Development and Local Government was established.

 

The Malaysian Fire Service was consolidated as a federal department and the unification of Fire and Rescue Services in the Federal States on 1 January 1976. This unification placed the Malaysian Fire Service under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. This was followed by the Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Melaka Fire Services on 1 January 1977.

 

On 15th May 1981, the Sabah and Sarawak Fire Services were merged.On 8th January 1997, the Cabinet agreed to change the name of the Malaysian Fire Services Department to the Fire and Rescue Department, Malaysia, where on 21st February 1997, the Prime Minister of Malaysia officially announced and launched the change of name, logo and flag of the Fire and Rescue Department, Malaysia in Genting Highlands.In 1998, the Department acquired 2 helicopters and the Fire Air Unit was established. In 2005, JBPM received MS ISO 9001:2000 recognition in the field of fire and rescue operations.
